Stages & Key Dates

To become a Firefighter you will have to undertake a series of tests designed to assess your suitability for the role.

The first stages are designed to make an initial assessment of your potential to work as a firefighter using a range of specifically designed questions which examine the qualities and basic knowledge you need for the role. Firefighter recruitment is always a competitive process, with an extremely high number of applicants competing for a small number of roles, so we can only take the highest performing individuals at each part of the selection process on to the next stage.

Stage 1   |  Candidate registration, realistic job preview & eligibility tests

Thursday 8 March –  Monday 26 March 2018

The first element of the online process is to register some basic personal details about yourself before you progress to the realistic job preview.

The realistic job preview is a questionnaire, which presents you with information about the various demands and challenges you may be faced with as a firefighter. The realistic job preview will give you a score based on your response to these questions that indicates how likely you would be suited to the role of firefighter. After completing the realistic job preview you will be asked if you wish to proceed to complete the eligibility questions.

After the eligibility questions have been completed the responses from candidates will be checked and those eligible to continue the process will be sent a link to complete the Behavioural Styles Questionnaire.

Stage 2  |  Behavioural Styles Questionnaire

Tuesday 10 April – Monday 16 April 2018

The Behavioural Styles Questionnaire explores your preferred behaviours in a working environment. This test is not timed.

Candidates that pass the Behavioural Styles Questionnaire will be invited to proceed to complete the Situational Judgement Test.

Please see information for completing Behavioural Style Questionnaire here including example question.

Stage 3  |  Situational Judgement Test

Tuesday 24 April – Monday 30 April 2018

The Situational Judgement Test measures your judgement and decision making skill in situations you may typically face in the fire and rescue service. This test is not timed.

Candidates that pass the Situational Judgement Test will be invited to proceed to complete the Ability Tests.

Please see information for completing Situational Judgement Test here including example questions.
